Shooting two targets with one arrow...

Samsung's newly announced Galaxy A80 has an interesting camera feature. There is only one camera setup which functions for the rear and as selfie camera. It's novel design reminds us of the almost extinct sliding phones and flip-able phones. But what Samsung's A80 is doing here is a little of both.

The cameras mounted at the top are initially at the rear. However, when the user selects selfie mode, or the front camera, a panel slides up top and flips the camera towards the user. When that perfect selfie is done, it slides back into its place and flips the camera back to the rear. The A80 will be the first phone to have this feature according to Samsung’s “New Infinity” display, which was announced last year.

The camera system contains three camera. The main camera features 48 megapixels with f/2.0. It's sidekicks are an ultrawide 8 megapixel f/2.2 camera and a ToF, time-of-flight sensor. It is basically a sensor to give a depth effect to images. The flipping and sliding mechanism makes way more room for the display without compromising on the quality of selfie camera. The phone's 6.7-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2400) is much more noticeable with a Super AMOLED display.

Pros and Cons

This innovative design is going to completely get rid of the bezels at some point. With this, there will be no need for tear drop notch or a camera island in the screen. By removing the camera from the picture, bezels are ironed out even further. However, there may be some drawbacks to consider. For starters, this whole thing depends on a complex mechanism, if the phone will be used roughly, there are chances it will malfunction. Moreover, it may also take a while to 'prep' the camera for use.

Samsung Galaxy A series

The Galaxy A80 will be launching on 29th May. It will be released with the complete A series lineup which includes A10, A20, A30, A50 and A70, all of which are already announced.  The A70 will be the first of the A series lineup, with a launch date of 26th April. Samsung announced it in February.

Samsung Galaxy A70 will feature a teardrop notched display with a 6.7-inch screen size. It will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor. As for the caeras, it features triple cameras similar to the A80. These include a main 32-megapixel sensor with a 5-megapixel depth sensor and an ultrawide 8-megapixel camera. The It will be available in four colors: coral, blue, black, and white.

The prices for these handsets are not known yet. But our best guess puts it somewhere close to $800 for the A80.

Stay tuned for more.
